Transforming Transportation - Biocene 2022
This year, the Stardust team attended Biocene 2022 as a member of N.A.S.A V.I.N.E. (Virtual Interchange for Nature- Inspired Exploration) Education Cluster. NASA V.I.N.E focuses on nature-inspired exploration on Earth and in space for the benefit of all of life. Biocene is a conference where ideas and research on innovation inspired by nature are shared, connections are made, and opportunities for collaborations are fostered.
Amplifying Thriving in a Global Community
The critical challenges we face today cross multiple disciples and borders. How can positive change be amplified? How can technology be harnessed to support and propel this change? In episode 2 of *details, we spotlight applications that emulate nature rather than oppose it, from Colorado-based Biomimic and startup Founder, Lily Urmann, and we explore the benefits of scale in deploying solutions that address complex challenges, from India-based Tata Consultancy Services Design Thinker and Manager, Jayashree Nagarajan.
New Systems of Value and Wealth with People in Mind
Have you ever questioned the systems of value and wealth currently in place? Value and wealth are no longer only linked to economic prosperity, and their definitions have evolved to speak on the quality of life - the relationships between people, the receptivity of the community, and its adaptation to community needs. In the third episode of *details, our guests Gareth Jenkins and Mark Raymond explore this with Moderator, Christopher Collens.
The Responsibility of Designing Resilience
In the first episode of our speaker series, *details, we ask the question, can resilience be designed? And if so, how do we create it, and what are the parameters to responsibly designing it? In this conversation, we explore the terrain of recovery, of re-imagination, and reflect on the ways that cultures around the world have leaned into these experiences. This conversation features visual artist Nadia Huggins and interior architect Yutaka Takiura, moderated by Giselle Carr.
Future Playground: Island Resiliency
Future Playground, an international team of collaborators from Germany, Trinidad and the United States, explores climate fiction scenarios at the intersection of art, science, and emergent technology. With sea-levels on the rise, Future Playground speculates how a proactive, desirable, and inclusive life-centered future could look for island and coastal nations.
HLSCC Client Spotlight
The Caribbean continues to be one of the global pioneers in adopting progressive, sustainable policies and strategies. Sometimes, that can take the form of deep strategic review of one’s brand, and revealing the gold that is already present. In the British Virgin Islands, H. Lavity Stoutt Community College (HLSCC) has stood the test of time, building a legacy honouring its iconic Founder, the late Hugh Lavity Stoutt, with considerable contribution to the territory. We were pleased to work with HLSCC on Brand Strategy and Planning.
Smarter Cities: An Analysis of Our Future’s Cities
Cities magnify humanity’s strengths, and is a living, breathing phenomenon. They grow, evolve, and transform. Although cities change of their own accord, they may not always be efficient. Is there such a thing as an efficient city? How do you build a city that is smart, adaptable and efficient for not only the humans that dwell within it, but the ecosystems that we depend on?
Wild Resilience at NASA Biocene
In November 2020, I spoke at the second annual NASA Biocene Event, on the topic of Wild Resilience: Learnings from Island Nations for a World in Disorder. Around the world, island nations such as those in the Caribbean, have developed not only a relentless sense of resilience, but an exquisite nature of antifragility; that is to say, in some ways island nations have developed strength from disorder.
